This group boat project is inspired by various fabrication methods used by indigenous peoples throughout history. E X O prioritized the use of naturally sourced materials such as Jute, Poplar wood, and Bee's Wax in its construction, with contemporary “artificial” sealants added for additional support once the deadlines got a little tight. Its structure was distilled into two main components, an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton. The “endoskeleton” was a water-sealed burlap skin which was stretched within a curvilinear “exoskeleton” made of steamed Poplar wood. When placed in the sea, EXO maintained a slow-but-steady pace. Many noted it provided a unique immersive experience due to the fabric enhancing the rippling sensation of the aquatic environment around it.
